Although we usually consider the specific tasks of plan review such as takeoff, markup, and approvals what we are working on is providing better hardware for BIM. Specifically, we spend our time considering how to make ergonomic and functional displays for viewing and interacting with all types of construction drawings.

Autodesk, who provide a comprehensive BIM solution under their Construction Cloud portfolio created this infographic on the future of BIM, originally published in 2019 the figures may have changed but the concepts and direction remain the same.

With BIM, it is the increased connectivity across the workflow from design, planning, building, and usage that not only saves time and cost but also enables higher-quality results.

BIM & Construction Automation

Clearly, as aspects of construction become automated, BIM will be integral to the process. I was particularly interested in the outlook presented in this article, https://www.autodesk.com/autodesk-university/article/Future-BIM-Will-Not-Be-BIM-and-Its-Coming-Faster-You-Think. One of the key points the author makes is currently BIM is being used to collect data based on inputs that are prepared manually. The future will be more rules based input with the system creating the results, more and more of the results will be automated. With the regular news reports of 3D printing and similar technologies it is easy to see where this is headed.
