Quality & LED Video Walls

A brief look at two aspects of quality as it relates to LED video walls, image quality and reliability.

Image Quality

Image quality can be considered from many parameters such as brightness, contrast, resolution, flicker, color accuracy, color range, color consistency across the display, and changes over time. All of these may have have better/worse and acceptable/not acceptable type considerations, metrics can be established and standards set but in general they are likely to be largely subjective depending on the user and what the video wall is being used for.

While resolution is the probably the first specification people think of with LED video walls as it is one of the main factors affecting cost, color quality is another important one. For example if the video wall is going to be used in the broadcast industry, and many are, the component color consistency is very important. What this refers to is the color variation between the actual LED pixel components (diodes). So for the color red with a 620nm wavelength a variation of up to +/- 2.5nm will give a superior result. For the corporate market with usage in a building lobby or a video wall in a meeting room a variation up to 5~10nm may be quite acceptable.

These are subjective choices that will affect the cost of the video wall but not the reliability.

Reliability

LED video walls typically claim around 70,000 ~ 100,000 operational life, even at 24/7 that is comfortably over 5 years continuous usage. However we have all seen LED video walls with dark dark or flashing areas on the display, and at closer inspection there can be failed pixels.

There are two main considerations:

  1. Design, component, assembly, testing, ie a “quality” product.
  2. Maintenance ie terms of being both easy and low cost.

Volanti only looks to associate itself with quality component and assembly houses, we do quality process reviews and looking at the LED video walls we installed in the past we feel confident for the future.

In terms of maintenance, front serviceable is now nearly standard and replacing a LED module is not a skilled task. The LED module is about 8″ x 6″ and removed using a magnet too to pull the defective module off the housing and then a replacement is simply plugged in. No soldering or resetting required as th module will automatically match the stored settings for the video wall.
